When Do I…?

We get a lot of questions that begin with “When do I…,” “When should I…,” “Is it too early (or late) to…,” all of which refer to the different things we should be doing each season to ensure that our plants stay healthy and beautiful everyday of the year. To help you answer these sorts of questions, we have created some guidelines for you to consult from time to time. So, here we go with our answers to “WHEN DO I…?”:

Plant Bulbs—Plant Fall Bulbs mid-September to late October; plant Spring Bulbs about mid-March (or when ground is thawed)

Plant Annuals & Perennials: Anytime after Mother’s Day through the remainder of growing season.

Plant Vegetables:  Plant  Cool Season Veggies by Mother’s Day when the soil temperature is between 40-50 degrees and plant Warm Season Veggies in Late May/early June when the soil temperature is between 50-60 degrees.

Plant Trees & Shrubs: Anytime the ground is not frozen, which is usually between mid to late April through very early October.

Water Trees & Shrubs: Water regularly during growing season, especially when it is hot and dry. During the winter, water every 3-4 weeks when the air temperature is above 40 degrees.

Fertilize Lawns:    Fertilize your lawn four times during the year—Late March/early April, Late May/ early June, Late July/ early August, Late September/ early October

Fertilize Annuals & Perennials: Fertilize your annuals and perennials weekly throughout the growing season.

Fertilize Vegetables: Fertilize your veggies about once a month (every 21-28 days) during the entire growing season, even after fruit appears on your plants.

Fertilize Trees and Shrubs: You should fertilize your trees and shrubs, including your fruit trees, twice a year—one in early April and once in early September

Prune Trees: Prune your trees in late winter or early spring (Feb-March).

Prune Shrubs: Prune your spring flowering shrubs once their blooming is completed and prune summer flowering shrubs in late winter or early spring.
